I am Dr. Michaela Kirby, Division Director of the Expressive Therapies program at Lesley University. Our program was founded over 45 years ago and is a vibrant, active community of practitioners and scholars today. At Lesley we have five different specializations in our master's programs, a doctoral program in Expressive Therapies, and several certificates, including a certificate in Arts and Health. In our master's programs, we have specializations in five areas: Art, Dance Movement, Drama, Expressive Arts, and Music.
What makes our program at Lesley truly unique is that students across all the specializations share classes together. When students graduate, they're competent in their area of study, and also have an understanding of the use of the arts across disciplines. All of our programs are highly experiential, hands on, and individualized to optimize learning and growth for each student and their unique interests. You will learn to approach mental health counseling with an embodied, trauma informed, and culturally responsive lens.
Our master's program is offered in two formats: on campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, or in a low residency model, where you participate in summer residencies in Cambridge, and then continue your studies online while completing internships in your own community. In our Art Therapy specialization, you will help others explore the therapeutic power of art making. You will draw on and expand your artist's identity as you study to promote health and well being through traditional and nontraditional medium. You can investigate the power of Dance and Movement as a therapeutic outlet for individuals, groups and communities in our Dance Movement specialization. Learn proven strategies for opening channels of expression and nonverbal communication, using dance as a lens for observation and intervention. As a Drama Therapy student, you'll learn to support individuals in making emotional, behavioral and physical change through the application of drama and theater techniques. Techniques such as improvisation, storytelling, roleplay are used to help individuals across a lifespan, communicate their inner experience, strengthen relationships, and promote well being. In the Expressive Arts specialization, you will learn to integrate the full spectrum of artistic expression into therapeutic practice. You will learn to select approaches from music, drama, dance, writing and visual arts that fit client's needs and abilities, utilizing the principles of creativity, imagination, and expression. As a Music Therapy student, you'll expand your identity as a musician by learning to support health through musical expression. You will learn how to engage others in music making as a means to mental health and wellness.
Enhance your practice and become a leader in Expressive Therapies through our low residency doctoral program, which is inclusive of all arts therapies specializations. In our doctoral program, you'll learn to apply research and creativity to spark individual and societal change through scholarship and collaboration. Lesley University's doctoral program provides you with the opportunity for in depth study, artistic growth, and professional development. In all of our programs, you will have the opportunity to join with and learn from Lesley's world recognized faculty. Our programs are designed to promote an inclusive, critically informed atmosphere where we encourage you to become a critical thinker, creative and reflective practitioner, and an instrument of therapeutic and social change. There's a spirit of creativity that runs through the Expressive Therapies program at Lesley University. Come join us.
